G’day, Dean here.
I’ve actually been playing bass since 1982. I was originally a guitar player and got my first guitar in 1972. Yes I am that old on the outside, however, even with all the experiences I’ve had, I still feel like I am in my late 20’s.
Why the Bass? Quite honestly, I had always loved rhythm guitar, Malcolm Young was kind of my role model. Problem was there were no jobs going for guitarists, only Bass Player’s were wanted in the early 80’s. Oddly enough, I had never really listened to the bass in music… mainly the guitar and Drums stood out for me. Until…..
I am self taught on guitar, but when it came to applying for jobs to be a bass player I thought it best to get some lessons from a pro. My bass teacher was Jose McLaughlan. In my very first lesson he said, ” you are either a bass player or you are not, lets find out. I want you to go back and listen to all of your favourite songs, listen to what the bass player is doing, then try figure out why they are doing it.”
My world exploded and my mind was blown… I had no Idea the power and influence the bass had in music. I had just never really heard it before. Now that I was awakened, I knew the bass was for me. I still play guitar, but BASS… it’s my passion.
Originally from the Gold Coast of Australia, I now base myself out of Elora Ontario Canada.
Below are just a few snapshots of me and a few of the bands I’ve had the pleasure to play in and a few of the cool musicians I’ve played with.
